There are two ways the public usually hears about heavy metals in food, and both fail.
The first is the scare headline: a single product, a single lab result, a number ripped out of context with no comparison to a standard, no dose, and no source you can check. The second is the regulatory document: technically accurate, exhaustively cited, and completely unreadable for anyone without a toxicology background. One side is loud and unsourced. The other is sourced and silent.
I built the Heavy Metal Index to occupy the space neither side will. Its premise is a single sentence: trace heavy-metal evidence from food to source.
The Problem With How We Talk About Contamination
I've spent years arguing that the way we surface contamination data is as much of a problem as the contamination itself. In my analysis of why public exposé testing is counterproductive, I made the case that one-off "we tested this product and found lead" campaigns rarely change anything. They frighten consumers, trigger a defensive cycle from manufacturers, and—because they isolate a single product rather than mapping the whole supply chain—they almost never lead to a durable standard.
The deeper issue is epistemic. A number like "13 ppb of arsenic" means nothing without three companions: the regulatory action level it should be compared against, the ingredient pathway that put it there, and the body of research that tells you whether that level matters for the population eating it. Strip those away and you don't have evidence. You have a number doing the work of fear.
So the question that produced the Index was simple: what would it look like if every contamination claim came pre-attached to its evidence?
What the Index Actually Is
The Heavy Metal Index is a public reference database, not a brand-ranking site and not a certification seal. It aggregates peer-reviewed research and government data and structures it into something you can navigate by the question you actually have.
It currently spans four content layers:
- Products — risk profiles for categories like infant formula, baby cereals, purées, and snacks.
- Ingredients — commodity-level profiles for rice, cocoa, fish, vegetables, and grains, where most contamination originates.
- Metals — individual summaries for lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, nickel, and the rest of the priority set.
- Regulations — agency action levels and jurisdiction-specific thresholds, mapped across well over a hundred jurisdictions.
Underneath those pages sits the part that matters most: an evidence base drawn from more than 1,500 peer-reviewed studies, government reports, and programmatic databases, structured into discrete evidence records. Every claim on a page resolves to one of those records. Nothing floats unsourced.
There's also an assistant—"Ask the Index"—that answers questions about heavy metals using only the indexed, cited pages, and is explicitly built to refuse speculation. If the evidence isn't in the index, the answer is "I don't know," not a guess. That constraint is the whole point. A tool that confidently invents a number is worse than no tool at all.
Why an Index, and Not Another Standard
I already run a standard. The Heavy Metal Tested & Certified (HMTc) program at the Paleo Foundation sets category-specific contaminant limits using ALARA-based principles and statistical risk matrices, and its consumer-facing directory lives at heavymetaltested.com. So why also build an index?
Because a standard and an index do different jobs, and confusing them is how trust erodes.
A standard makes a judgment: this much is acceptable in this category, and here is the reasoning. An index makes no judgment at all—it organizes the evidence so that anyone, including people who disagree with my standard, can see what the science and the regulations actually say and draw their own line. The Index has to be useful to a regulator in one jurisdiction, a quality-assurance lead at a manufacturer, a researcher checking a claim, and a parent reading an ingredient label. None of those people should have to take my word for anything.
This separation is deliberate. I argued in my work on certification as a framework for reducing heavy-metal exposure in infant and child foods that the credibility of a certification depends on the credibility of the evidence beneath it. The Index is that evidence layer, made public and made navigable—so the certification isn't asking for faith, it's pointing at a citation.
Evidence to Source, Source to Action
The reason I keep returning to provenance is that contamination is a supply-chain problem wearing a product-label costume. When a baby cereal shows elevated cadmium, the cadmium didn't originate in the factory. It came up through the soil, into the grain, often by way of decades of accumulated fertilizer input—a story I traced in detail in my historical analysis of heavy metals in fertilizers. If your information stops at the finished product, you will spend forever testing symptoms and never touch the cause.
The Index is built to run the other direction: from the product you're holding, back through the ingredient, to the metal, to the regulation, to the studies. Follow that chain and contamination stops being a mystery and becomes a map. And a map is the only thing you can act on.
That's also why this matters for the larger argument I keep making—that heavy metals are the next major consumer-health issue, not a fringe one. You cannot mobilize a public around an issue they can't independently verify. Transparency isn't a nicety layered on top of the science. It's the precondition for the science changing anything.
What I Want It to Become
Right now the Index is a reference. Where I want it to go is infrastructure—the place a journalist checks a number before publishing it, the place a manufacturer's QA team looks before reformulating, the citation a regulator reaches for when a threshold gets revisited. Not because it tells them what to think, but because it shows them, with receipts, what is known.
The food system does not yet have a shared, public, sourced map of heavy-metal contamination. It has scattered studies, siloed regulations, and a lot of frightened guessing in between. The Heavy Metal Index is my attempt to assemble that map in the open—so that the next conversation about metals in food can start from evidence instead of from a headline.
